A Line Drawn in Moscow: Eight Decades After Bukovina Was Cut in Half
## An Ultimatum Nobody Asked the People of Bukovina About

Two Halves of One Land: While Suceava Profits from UNESCO Monasteries, Northern Bukovina Profits from Dark Headlines Bukovina is a region split in two. Its southern half, with the city of Suceava, lies in Romania; its northern half, centered on Chernivtsi, belongs to Ukraine. Yet the same land, the same forests, and the same painted churches tell one story — while the two halves live very different realities. On the Romanian side, tourism built around the UNESCO-listed painted monasteries of Bukovina — Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița — brings steady income, well-marked trails, restored guesthouses, and a flow of visitors from across Europe. Local authorities treat heritage as an investment: restoration projects, festivals, and infrastructure funded largely by EU money. Across the border, Northern Bukovina's landmarks rarely make travel blogs. Instead, the region appears in international news for border tensions, mobilization, smuggling stories, or political scandals. Chernivtsi, once a multicultural gem known as "Little Vienna," now struggles to convert its remarkable architecture and history into a tourism economy. The contrast is striking because the raw material is nearly identical. Both sides share Austro-Hungarian heritage, Hutsul mountain culture, and medieval churches. But where Suceava built a brand, Chernivtsi inherited instability — and headlines, unlike monasteries, don't attract tourists. Locals on both sides of the border still hope the divide is temporary. Some dream of cross-border routes linking the painted monasteries with Chernivtsi's old town — a single tourist trail across two countries. For now, however, one half of Bukovina sells tickets, and the other sells stories the world reads with concern.
